Police officers kill unarmed suspect in Ruiru

Police officers dragged and shot dead an unarmed man in Ruiru, Kiambu County last week, in the latest appalling incident of extrajudicial killings in Kenya.

According to reports reaching Missing Voices desk, the man, a suspected carjacker, had fled from the police officers who seemed intent to end his life without bargain.

The already wounded suspect sought refuge in a church, where congregants had gathered for weekly worship, but that did not stop the officers from committing the crime.

The officers are said to have dragged the man out of the Israel Assemblies of God Church in Kihunguro area, Ruiru Sub County and shot him dead on the spot despite his pleas for mercy.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in a media statement acknowledged the incident and said an investigation has been launched into the matter.

“On conclusion of investigations, if the police are found culpable of the allegations, the Authority will ensure the officers responsible face the full force of the law by making appropriate disciplinary or criminal remedial recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions or suitable Government Agencies,” the statement read in part.

Missing Voices strongly condemns the unlawful killing of the suspect in Ruiru. The organization, as it has done severally before, pledges to stay focused on this case until his family finds justice.

We urge the police authorities in Kiambu to move with speed to bring the killer policemen to book and prosecute the case to completion.
