Police officer charged afresh with murder of civilian
Thursday, 9th February 2023
An administration police constable was charged afresh with the murder of a civilian in 2018.
Yunus Athman Ali appeared before the Mombasa High Court on Thursday, February 9, on charges of committing the crime in 2018 in Mwenza Village, Likoni.
The suspect denied the charges before Lady Justice Anne Ong’injo.
The case has been revived after Ali’s co-accused, Mohammed Karega Kassim, opted to become a prosecution witness and will now testify in the trial.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) filed an affidavit opposing the release of Ali on bond, as they are investigating him on another allegation of murder.
He is alleged to have murdered Albert Wekesa, a bodaboda rider in May, 2022 and his body found along Dongo Kundu Road in Kwale County.
The High Court will rule on the matter in March.
In the meantime, Ali will remain at the Shimo la Tewa Maximum Prison.
