20-year old Ezekiel Oduor Okiru was fatally shot by police officers, on November 27th. He was allegedly shot for not wearing a mask. Okiru let his home around 7pm, to close the car wash he worked at in Malaba town. On his way, he was shot by an officer, for allegedly defying an order to stop. Oduor died at Kocholia dispensary while waiting for an ambulance to take him to a hospital.
Protests in Malaba town erupted after Oduor’s killing as residents demanded answers for Oduor’s death and accountability within the National Police Service.
Ezekiel Oduor Okiru’s mother described Oduor as a bright student who had enrolled in Kolanya Boys’ High School, but after learning was suspended because of COVID-19 he began washing vehicles.
