REPORT

Caroline Achieng was allegedly attacked by police officers from Magunga police station on July 7,2021 at Laknyiero trading centre when they were enforcing curfew measures. According to the bar owner, the bar was closed as has guest rooms that are allowed to operate within the COVID regulations. An eye witness alleges the deceased was hit by a rungu by a police officer enforcing curfew regulations. The police took Achieng to Camillus Mission Hospital in Karungu, Sori town in Migori County where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Homa Bay County Police Commander Anthony Njeru stated Caroline was ordered to carry a crate of beer and walk towards the patrol officers, when she collapsed and died. The postmortem report disputed the police account, as pathologists Dr Awind Victor Omollo said Caroline died after being strangled and hit on the head with a blunt object. Caroline was an orphan who worked at the bar for 9 years.
