THREAT TO MY LIFE BY PANGANI OCS, I LIVE IN FEAR
A civillian man’s life is in danger following threats from a senior police officer.
Moses Odero, a businessman operating school transport at Pangani and Muthaiga in Nairobi wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation seeking protection of his dear life and prosecution of Pangani OCS Samir Yunis .
Samir Yunis and his counterpart police Inspector Amos Odhiambo were a week ago profiled in an expose on one of the leading broadcasters having received bribe to set free a suspect in a letter addressed to the CID, Odero narrates the chronology of events which he suspects could have brought about the mix up of his involvement that may have led to the accused (Yunis) suspecting him.
“There is a day when I was in the OCS office, some people entered and started talking where the OCS demanded money. From the position I was seated he thought I was taking photos of him while receiving money from the Somalis. That made him think I was involved.” Read the statement in part.
Odero added that on the very day he left the office having not been assisted. He further adds that he received tips from a man known to him as Fahim whom he met at a disclosed location revealed to him that he had been sent by the Pangani OCP to spy on him and tip them so they he is gotten rid of.
“On the 27th July 2022, Fahim told me he was sent by the OCS that whenever Fahim spots me, he should call the OCS and Inspector Amos Odhiambo immediately so that they could organize how they could finish me with my friend Mustafa.” Remarked Odero.
According to the UN Handbook on police accountability, oversight and integrity Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials, the men and women in blue are expected to at all times fulfill the duty imposed upon them by law, by serving the community and by protecting all persons against illegal acts, consistent with the high degree of responsibility required by their profession.
In the same regard, Article 2 in the performance of their duty, the law enforcement officials shall respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons. It is against the law to threaten one’s life more so for a person in high regard.
In addition, The police are always expected to avoid any act of corruption. They are to also rigorously oppose and combat all such acts.
According to data released by missing voices, 75 people have been killed by the police or disappeared in 2022 alone. Out of the number, 72 were as a result of police killings. Every citizen has the right of protection as police too oath to uphold laws that protect everyone within the borders.
